Horses natural food is grass, however if you expect your horse to work, its source of food must be supplemented with something extra to boost its energy. How much you feed your horse really depends on his size, age & amount of work that is expected from your horse.

There is a very wide and varied selection of concentrated feeds on the market. Feeds come in a variety of forms and descriptions such as flakes, cubes & mixes and provides your horse with a good balance of nutrients.

It’s not a good idea to guess the amount of food to give your horse, so I have put a chart with a rough guideline below.

 

 

The amounts shown on this chart are for daily feeds and should be split into several feeds per day.

 

Under 12hh...................14 to 16 lbs

12 to 13hh.....................16 to 18 lbs

13 to 14hh.....................20 to 22 lbs

14 to 15hh.....................22 to 24 lbs

15 to 16hh.....................24 to 26 lbs
