There are various types of rugs, blankets and sheets for all purposes.  A rug will keep your horse warm in the winter months and in the summer it will keep your horse clean. Stable and day rugs are fastened at the front by a buckle. Most other rugs are fastened with a girth type strap and leg straps. There are those who prefer to steal rugs off the horses at night rather than pay for one.  Unfortunately its not that easy to stop thefts at night, but you might be able to deter them by using something like a permanent marker pen to put a noticeable mark or name on your rug, you may not think it looks nice but it will help you notice your rug if it does get stolen.

Make sure you buy the correct size rug for your horse or pony. To ensure you get the correct size, measure your horse, starting just in front of the withers to above the top of the tail.

Stable or night rugs can be made of synthetic material, jupe, hemp or canvas.

HEMP RUGS

are more suitable for ponies and are half lined with blanket.

CANVAS RUGS

are fully lined, stronger and are more suited for the larger horse.

BLANKETS

are worn under the stable rug for extra warmth.

SYNTHETIC RUGS

are made of polyester and other fibres. They provide good temperature control and better airflow.

NEW ZEALAND RUGS

are probably the most well known. They are made of waterproof canvas to keep your horse warm and dry as well as clean.

SWEAT RUGS

are used to cool off the horse. They are made of cotton and have the look of wire mesh.
